Reference: UX/UI for a product configurator

Configurator for metalwork: UX and UI for Metallzeit.

Metallzeit from Wolkersdorf builds railings, carports, stairs and canopies to measure. OSTWERK developed analysis, flow and design of a new configurator and customer portal. A development partner of the client handled the programming.

A project by OSTWERK, digital agency in Vienna.

Starting point

How does an enquiry by phone become a guided process?

What we delivered.

  • The previous configurator was very plain: product selection and an enquiry.Analysis: competition, audiences, business processes and weak points.
  • There was no 2D or 3D view and no choice of material, surface and colour.Flow: a user flow from the category to the enquiry.
  • Architects, general contractors and private clients have different questions.Design: wireframes and high-fidelity frames for desktop and mobile.
  • The sales team should have to clarify fewer follow-up questions.Portal: feedback and concept for customer account, projects, tickets and product management.

Build

Four decisions behind the configurator.

  1. Six main categories, then style, area of use, material, dimensions and surface. A progress indicator, explanations and a preview before completion accompany every step.

  2. Anyone who is only looking for a direction chooses style and unit and gets a rough estimate. Products become easier to compare this way.

  3. Besides the product enquiry there is a separate service enquiry in which maintenance is configured and requested.

  4. The first step always shows a simple 2D view. The 3D view follows later so that the entry does not become too complex.

Project timeline

From the workshop to the finished frames.

  1. Workshop

Product vision, audiences, user journeys and requirements are developed together.

  2. Analysis and concept

Competition, weak points, product structure and user flow form the foundation.

  3. Design

Wireframes and frames are sharpened in reviews with the client from January to April 2025.

  4. Handover

In June 2025 the frames and a report go to the developer, OSTWERK accompanies the implementation.

Result

Metallzeit has a configurator and a service configurator that guide enquiries clearly and are publicly online.

  • Product configurator and service configurator online
